Paralympic Athletics

Athletics is the largest Paralympic sport with 1,100 athletes competing in 2012. People with learning disabilities will be able to compete in Class 20 events in 2012.

The Great Britain (GB) team will have a hard task to beat China, which won three times as many track and field medals as the second-placed Australians in the 2008 Games.

Venue: Olympic Stadium

The Olympic Stadium in the Olympic Park is the venue for Olympic and Paralympic athletics.

Facts

Athletes compete in track events, throwing events and jumping events with popular sports including wheelchair racing and Paralympic Athletics can be traced all the way back to the Ancient Olympic Games from 776 BC.

Athletes to watch

South African Paralympian Oscar Pistorius, known as ‘the fastest man on no legs’ is tipped for the 2012 Paralympics after a record breaking performance at the BT Paralympic World Cup in May 2011. Great Britain’s own Dan Greaves beat his own discus world record. The double Paralympian is looking good for 2012.

How can I get involved?

There are athletics clubs all over the UK and plenty of events and competitions throughout the year.
